Clayworks I & II
Hand building and wheel throwing clay class for individuals. Finished works will be both sculptural and utilitarian. A later class will be scheduled for glazing finished works.

Arts & Crafts Goes Green!
Kids will make crafts galore using recycled materials and those found in nature. If you enjoy building and creating using objects such as plastic bottles, pine cones, or cardboard boxes, then this is the camp for you. Have you ever wondered just how many uses there are for the common potato? We will construct a variety of take home crafts such as bird feeders, stamp designs, natural dyes using fruits and vegetables, and more! Come with your creative imagination and a desire to get messy!

“From Page to Stage”
Students will explore the process of taking words on a page and transforming them into performance on stage. Through a variety of fun activities, students will learn the fundamentals of acting and improvisation. Students will explore the world of Theatre and learn basic acting skills, stage movement, theatre terms, mask making and much more.

Instructor: Michael Norman, O’Neal Upper School Drama and Spanish Teacher Duke graduate and a 2008 Globe Scholar, studying active approaches to the teaching of Shakespeare at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.
“Shakespeare in the Summer”
This camp focuses on the reading, understanding, and performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Students will read and understand the play through performance techniques. Discussion of literary techniques will offer students an opportunity to advance their literary analysis skills, but the focus of the course will be on the joy of performing a Shakespearean comedy! There will be a “performance” for family and friends on the last day.

Strings and Jazz Camp
Daily activities will range from group studio classes and lessons to music theory and history review. The students will have the opportunity to watch live performances, listen to a variety of recordings, learn more about their instruments and specific performers of their instruments, and explore some of the foundations of music theory, including scales, key signatures, time signatures and conducting patterns. During the last day of camp, there will be an open recital in the theater.

Instructors:
Katie White is O’Neal’s strings instructor and has studied viola performance at the Interlochen Arts Camp and at Lawrence Conservatory in Appleton, WI, where she played in the Lawrence Symphony, the Fox Valley Symphony, the Green Bay Symphony, and numerous chamber groups. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, where she studied with Yizhak Schotten. Currently, she is completing her PhD in musicology at The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where she obtained her masters degree in musicology.
Aaron Vandermeer is a doctoral candidate in Brass Literature and Pedagogy at The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. He has diverse performing experiences in jazz, funk, musical theater, R&B and classical music. He received his masters of music degree in jazz studies from Indiana University. Vandermeer has performed with the David Baker Big Band, The Impalas, The Mustard Cats, The Dorsey Brothers Big Band, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, The Dynamics, Goza, and Mojai.

Creative Dance: Dancing Damsels and Dramatic Dragons
Camp time together will be filled with dancing, make-believe, and arts & crafts, as we explore an assortment of books that inspire movement. Combining props, costumes, and a little imagination, we will bring our stories to life on Parent Share Day (Friday, August, 6).

Instructor:Sue Peterson, dance teacher and owner of Carolina Performing Arts Center in Southern Pines. Sue started ballet at 3 years of age in England. She attended Elmhurst Ballet School and the Royal Ballet School, ultimately gaining Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Dance teaching qualifications.
