All Conference Baseball Players - Wednesday, May 07, 2008I wanted to write each of you and let you know about our three All Conference baseball players for the 2008 season. Their names are D.L. McLamb (2nd time), Cody Howe (1st time), and Travis Walters (1st time).
D.L. McLamb – DL had a great season for the Falcons. He hit .410 on the year with 25 RBI’s and 8 homeruns. What makes these numbers even more impressive is the fact that we only played 15 games all season. He led the conference in homeruns and was a close second in RBI’s (with the winner having played about 10 more games). DL was also our most versatile player. He was our primary starter on the mound (posting a 1.91 ERA) and averaging more than a strike out per inning. Also, he moved around this year from center field to first to catcher; doing whatever it took to help us win.
Cody Howe – Cody also had a great season. He hit right at the .300 mark with 2 homeruns. He also pitched for us, going 3-2 on the year with a sub 4 ERA. When he wasn’t pitching, Cody was playing first base, where he committed only 1 error all season. Most importantly however, Cody’s biggest impact was in his leadership of the team as team Captain (along with DL). He was willing to do what ever it took to improve and make us a good baseball team.
Travis Walters – Travis Walters was the spark plug for our offense. Travis hit .449 on the year, leading the team, and led the team with an unbelievable .600 on-base-percentage (led the conference as well). At one point he went a remarkable 8 for 9 during the middle of the year. Defensively, Travis was our most dependable defender, ending a great career spanning four years at second base. He only made 3 errors on the season with a few double plays thrown in.

O'Neal Golf Conference Tournament - Monday, May 05, 2008Location: Meadowlands in High Point
Teams – The O’Neal School, High Point Christian, Westchester Academy, Calvary, and Oak Ridge
Conditions: Very Nice and slightly breezy
In a very exciting conference tournament going down to the wire Westchester Academy posts a team best score of 299 to nip the O’Neal School by 1 shot. High Point Christian finished third with a score of 322, Calvary finished fourth with a score of 346. Troy Spencer was the medalist with a score of 70. Michael McGowan and Jonathan DiIanni from Westchester tied for second with an even par score of 72. The O’Neal Team scores were Lyman Woollens 73, Bert Subin 77, Mitchell Friesen and Stefan Streckfus with 78, and Will Rittenhouse 84. The O’Neal School named five players to all-conference: Michal McGowan(Player of the Year Runner-up), Stefan Streckfus, Mitchell Friesen, Bert Subin, and Lyman Woollens. Conference player of the year was Troy Spencer from High Point Christian.
The O’Neal kids are getting ready for the State Tournament scheduled for May 12th and 13th. Even though they were disappointed they did not when the Conference tournament this year, they posted a team low and are playing with a lot of confidence going into the State Tournament. I think this lit a fire under them and I look for them to practice harder making sure they have a different feeling on that bus ride home from States then the one they just had from conference. We have to put this out of our minds and focus on continuing to play better and let the chips fall where they may.

Varsity Baseball - 1st Round TAC Conference - Thursday, May 01, 2008I wanted to update everyone on the first round of the TAC Baseball conference tournament. The O’Neal school hosted Caldwell Academy on Thursday for 4/5 seed match-up. Early on it was relatively close. D.L. McLamb started on the mound for the Falcons and pitched two scoreless innings. D.L. was then followed by freshmen Devin Roberts, who threw the last three innings. Both pitches pitched well, working out of tough situations on occasion. Defensively, the Falcons put in one of their best efforts of the year to back our great pitching.
Offensively, it was a one man show. D.L. McLamb had two homeruns and 5 RBI’s. After striking out in the first, his next two at bats saw deep shots over the left field fence. Everyone else contributed on the night and ultimately the Falcons won 11-0.
The Falcons will next play at Westchester Country Day against the High Point Cougars on Saturday. Game time will be 2:00.

Varsity Golf vs. Fayetteville Academy - Tuesday, April 29, 2008Location Bayonet at Puppy Creek
Conditions Windy
The O’Neal School posted a low team score for the year at Bayonet where this years State Championship will be held. Led by Michael McGowan’s 73 the team posted a score of 302. Five out of the 6 players participating in the event broke 80. Mitchell Friesen and Lyman Woollens posted a score of 76, Bert Subin and Stefan Streckfus posted a score of 77, followed by Will Rittenhouse who shot 82 and Douglass Johnson shot 86. Fayetteville Academy was led by Hunter Howell who posted a match low of 72. Fayetteville Academy posted a score of 336.
It was nice to see we shot our best scores of the year on the golf course where the State Tournament is going to be held in two weeks. We are going to need to post lower team scores if we are going to repeat next years feat, but every player walked off the golf course talking positive about the golf course and their golf games. Everyone feels confident they can play even better than they did. They are starting to focus more at practice and looking forward to post season play. We have a couple of practices before conference and 10 days before States and I feel we will be ready for both.

Varsity Golf - Tuesday, April 08, 2008Location: Pinehurst No. 8
Teams: The O’Neal School, Arendell Parrot, and St. Davids
Conditions: Sunny and Breezy
On a beautiful day and a difficult golf course set-up Michael McGowan led the O’Neal School with a 76 to defeat state rival Arendell Parrot by 5 shots. The O’Neal School posted 318, Arendell Parrot 323, and St. Davids 368. On a tough scoring day the O’Neal Team did not post their best scores, but were a team of consistency. Stefan Streckfus posted an 80, Mitchell Friesen and Lyman Woollens posted 81’s, Bert Subin an 83, and Douglass Johnson 91. The individual best for the match was James Ellis from Arendell Parrot who posted 74. St. Davids was led by Daniel Clampett who posted a 78.
As we continue to progress through the year the kids are playing better, but unfortunately the scores are not showing it yet. As we continue to practice and playing I look for these players to start playing to their potential shortly. We continue to win matches even though we are not playing our best. This is a good sign for things to come. We have a few days of practice before our next match, so we will be able to focus on the things that are keeping our scores from being as low as they should be.
