O'Neal Stays Strong with Young People's Art Festival
O'Neal repeats its heavy presence in the winners circle for the 2016 Young People's Arts Festival. O'Neal's Patty Amato wins the Elementary Teacher Award.
The Moore County Arts Council recently held its annual Young People’s Arts Festival where the artistic talents of students in Moore County public, private, charter and home schools are showcased. This year the submittals were judged by Fran Gertz, a retired Moore County Schools art teacher and AP art consultant/trainer for the College Board. The winners were recognized at a reception at the Campbell House on February 5th. The exhibit will be open at the Campbell House until March 11th.
For the first time this year, an award was given to a teacher at each school level (elementary, middle, high school). The award is based on the overall collection of work and is selected by the same judge deciding the student awards. The goal of the award is to recognize teaching excellence and provide classroom funding for the teacher/school. O’Neal’s Lower School art teacher Patty Amato, is the winner of the elementary school award and is given $100 to use towards her classroom/studio.
O'Neal's Upper School winning slate was strong again this year claiming six of the 15 placed winners in addition to two Honorable Mentions. Last year, O’Neal students represented seven of the 18 placed winners and claimed 1st place for four of the seven categories.

Devon Moore, 12th Grade, Painting “Tobacco Road” – Honorable Mention
Tori Landers, 12th Grade, Photo/Digital Art “A Room with a View” – 1st place
Erin O'Connell, 12th Grade, Photo/Digital Art "$lock$ - 3rd place
Paige Thomas, 11th Grade, Printmaking “Behind the Scenes” – 3rd place
O’Neal’s Middle School held a respectable 4 out of the 17 placed winners, coming in second to Crain’s Creek Middle School in having most winners at the Middle School level.

Elementary School submittals all got certificates of participation and some were given Honorable Mentions. O’Neal had three of the 11 Honorable Mentions given at the elementary level, which the most from one school.
