10th Grade Class Trip to Charleston, SC

The tenth grade enjoyed an exciting and eventful trip to Charleston, SC from September 21st to 23rd.

Established in 1670, Charleston eventually became a wealthy port city. With an eye towards their future study of American history as juniors, the class visited such historic sites as Middleton Plantation, one of the oldest rice plantations and possessing stunning landscaped gardens where a scene from the Heath Ledger film The Patriot was filmed. On their second day, students toured St. Michel's Church, the oldest in Charleston, and one that has survived an earthquake and the Civil War. The class then visited the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon where such pivotal events as the presentation of the Declaration of Independence to the citizens of Charleston and the state's ratification of the US Constitution took place. That same day, students boarded a ferry and sailed to Fort Sumter, a federal fort on which the opening shots of the Civil War were fired in a barrage lasting longer than a day. Students and faculty alike also were thrilled to see the occasional dolphin shadowing the ferry. A dinner at Bubba Gump's and a night time ghost walk completed the day. The trip concluded with a morning tour of the College of Charleston where a number of O'Neal students have matriculated over the years.
