4th and 5th Grade Students Learn about Landfills and the Process of Recycling

Waste Management Sustainability Manager Amanda Fairley came down from Asheville and with help from Territory Manager Susan Turley, they presented last week to the 4th and 5th graders and discussed what can and should be recycled (and why some items were NOT recyclable i.e. thin plastic gets caught in the sorting machine and can clog up the works).

They watched some mini movies on what a recycling plant looks like and how the various products often end up in new facilities once they have been properly separated (such is the case with bulk plastic or paper). They had a chance to physically sort piles of miscellaneous debris into what could and could not be recycled. They also learned about landfills and how a landfill was constructed and carefully monitored for leachate.

As a culmination to the morning, the students had a chance to make their own tasty “landfill” using graham crackers as sand, marshmallows as trash, licorice as piping, etc. When the landfill was complete and full the students enjoyed a late morning snack. If only real landfills smelled and looked as delicious!
