O'Neal Upper School Students Travel to Nicaragua

O’Neal Upper School students traveled with Upper School Spanish and Drama Teacher Michael Norman to Nicaragua over the summer.  Organized by SAGE Global Education, the trip was both a service and 'adventure' trip.
Emma Furstein ’17, Kylie Paules '18, Vicky Strunk ’18, and Maggie Tally ’17  worked with the San Juan del Sur "Biblioteca móvil" and travelled to two different schools during their five days in Nicaragua.  At one school, they repainted a classroom and a few exterior walls.  At the second school, they installed the school's first library and the students worked closely with local elementary-aged children to learn more about their lives and culture.  Additionally, students painted trash cans to place on a beach and picked up trash on a remote beach near "playa gigante."  In addition to service, the students spent time experiencing local culture including sampling street food, playing impromptu volleyball and soccer games at the beach with locals, learning to salsa dance and zip-lining through the canopy of a local rainforest.  The stark difference between daily life in rural Nicaragua and here at home was something that the students commented on nearly every day but most impressive was their sense of how joyous and friendly everyone was that they met.
