O’Neal Hosts Lower School Open House

The public is invited to visit The O’Neal Lower School and its new greenhouse at a Lower School Open House on Wednesday, October 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Located in McMurray Hall, one of O’Neal’s five facilities on its 40 acre campus, the Lower School serves students from pre-kindergarten age 3 through fifth grade. The open house is being held during the morning hours of a school day so that visitors can see the teachers and students in action.

Open house attendees are encouraged to tour the new greenhouse. Built adjacent to the Lower School as part of its ever growing outdoor learning center, the greenhouse is one of the three components included in O’Neal’s science initiative, launched at the School’s annual auction in February and benefitted by O’Neal community members. The objective for the greenhouse is to add more energy and excitement to the Lower School science class, rendering many opportunities for learning. From a rain forest study on growing plants in different light to the plant life cycle starting from seed to fruit/vegetable and sharing what is harvested to cultivating worms and researching their contribution to the soil, the learning opportunities are endless.

The greenhouse is only a small component of an O’Neal Lower School student’s education. Students are taught by caring, creative and highly knowledgeable teachers who strive to meet each student’s learning needs with a variety of instructional methods. The facility has spacious and beautiful classrooms well-equipped with appropriate learning materials at each level. Technology is integrated into every classroom and includes SMART boards, laptops and the recent addition of iPads for fifth grade. In addition to their core classes, all Lower School students have Spanish class where they learn the basics of the language as well as the Latin culture. They have a detailed physical education curriculum that includes swimming for students starting in kindergarten. The pre-kindergarten program, which has reached full capacity for this school year, offers a mixture of traditional instruction and center-based learning and play. In addition to O’Neal’s Extended Care Center, afterschool programs such as the Lower School Chorus, Battle of the Books, Odyssey of the Mind and Science Olympiad are offered.
