Scholarship Recipients Announced

Three rising ninth graders, have been chosen to receive four-year scholarships at The O’Neal School.
Fulton Smith has been awarded the Helen Pringle Holmberg Scholarship. Cecilia Bockoven has been awarded the Nuzzo Family Foundation Scholarship. Kyndon Stone is the recipient of the Hannah Marie Bradshaw Scholarship.

The Nuzzo, Holmberg, and Bradshaw Scholars are selected based upon the students’ demonstration of scholastic ability, leadership potential and strength of character.
The scholarship process included an extensive application with essays and an interview with members of O’Neal’s Board of Trustees and O’Neal Head of School John Elmore.

The Helen Pringle Holmberg Scholarship is given in honor of Helen Holmberg, an O’Neal graduate and the School’s first John Motley Morehead Scholarship recipient. Helen’s father, the late Centre W. Holmberg, Jr., served as chairman of O’Neal’s Board of Trustees. Current O’Neal students as well as students from other schools are considered. Fulton Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Xan Smith, becomes the 17th Holmberg Scholar. Fulton is a current O’Neal student. Fulton is an athlete serving as a strong contributor for many sports, notably in basketball and golf. He is a member of the Jr. Beta Club in addition to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

The Nuzzo Family Foundation Scholarship is given by Mr. and Mrs. Sal Nuzzo in honor of Father John Nicola, a retired priest who was a beloved Latin teacher at O’Neal. Students not currently enrolled at O’Neal are considered. Cecilia Bockoven, O’Neal’s 16th Nuzzo Scholar, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bockoven currently of Hendersonville, NC. Cecilia is a member of the Jr. Beta Club and has participated in Math Counts as well as Debate Club. She has volunteered at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute as well as served on the technical crew and as assistant stage manager at the Flat Rock Playhouse. Cecilia plays volleyball and is on the track team. Presently at Hendersonville Middle School, Cecilia and her family will be moving to the Sandhills this summer.

The Hannah Marie Bradshaw Scholarship is given in memory of Hannah Marie Bradshaw. Hannah spent half of her life as an O’Neal student and she loved the School as a positive place that helped her reach her true potential. Students not currently enrolled at O’Neal are considered. Kyndon Stone, the 10th recipient of the scholarship, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Carroll of Whispering Pines. Kyndon enjoys participating and assisting with many sports such as wrestling and football. In addition to sports, he has strong interest in robotics and computers. Kyndon comes to O’Neal from New Century Middle School.
