The Senior Buddies program has become an honored tradition at The O’Neal School, where seniors are paired with 1st and 2nd grade students. Starting with seniors greeting their buddies with t-shirts and hugs on the first day of school, the buddies and seniors meet up once a month throughout the school year for various activities.
Last week, the seniors enjoyed one final event with their buddies—a popsicle picnic. On a beautiful spring morning, the soccer field was filled with buddies and their seniors playing whiffle ball and corn hole, buddies teaching their senior how to hula hoop, and a large crowd playing with the parachute. Giggles and smiles resonated through the fields. To wrap up the morning, all seniors and buddies enjoyed popsicles to cool off!
The event culminated a fantastic year with O’Neal’s oldest and some of the youngest students on campus. The formal closure event of the year will see the buddies leading seniors in during the Upper School awards ceremony later this month.
The Senior Buddy program was led this year by Student Forum Vice-President, senior Sarah McInnis and Director of Student Life Lulu Brase. Reflecting on the year, Sarah shared, “I have had a blast coordinating Senior Buddies activities this year. Working with kids is a passion of mine, and it was amazing to share this with my classmates. Both the seniors and their buddies always looked forward to their monthly activities, and I know the kids will remember the times they spend with their buddies fondly. WE are all so thankful for the opportunity to bond with the kids who look up to us. I am sad that the year is over but look forward to seeing the future successes of the Senior Buddy program.”
