Sixth Grade Travels to Camp Don Lee

Heather Weeks, Middle School Spanish Teacher
What do Fluffy Nutellas, heaping helpings of bacon and pancakes, and singing to snails have in common? The 6th grade class trip, of course! September 20-22, 34 6th graders headed to Camp Don Lee in Arapahoe, NC near the mouth of the Neuse River at the Pamlico Sound.

It was a picturesque location to unplug, unwind, and dive in!  Students, Mr. McMurray, Mrs. Walters, and Mrs. Weeks enjoyed three days of team-building challenges, environmental education classes, free time at the swimming hole, and tasty family-style meals. Among the highlights were: high dive stunts, fireside camp songs, encounters with a variety of marine life, an opportunity to dissect squids, and a morning session on the sail boat. Students learned about the Neuse River and the important role it plays in the ecosystem, economy, and life of eastern North Carolina. As the group departed, counselors commented on how polite and respectful the O’Neal students were during their stay at Camp Don Lee.
