Speuter Bowl Essay Winners Announced

Fourth grade students completed their 6-week unit on Pet Responsibility, thanks to the Moore County Pet Responsibility Committee. To culminate the unit, “Speuter” the dog visited the students and announced Speuter Bowl Essay winners in each of the fourth grade classes.

They are Taylor Graves and Lauren Goodridge. Otherwise known as the “Speuter Story Contest”, each student is asked to write a story describing how their pet would benefit from being spayed or neutered and how this would help solve the larger problem of pet overpopulation. With the support of their families and at no cost, one pet owned or sponsored by each award winner is altered at the Spay Neuter Veterinary Clinic of the Sandhills, thanks to funding from the Moore County Kennel Club.

The students were also treated with a special presentation from Suzy Lutz, executive director of Continuing the Mission, a nonprofit organization that trains service dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD. She brought her service dog in training, Maya and demonstrated the skills service dogs learn.

Ms. Lutz kicked off a service learning project for fourth grade. Continuing the Mission has given the 4th grade a wish list of items that the O'Neal community will be asked to fulfill in relation to a new service puppy. Ms. Lutz plans to come back several times during the year so the students could see the dog's growth and progress.
