O'Neal Faculty Attends UNC World View Workshop
On Wednesday, January 10th, O’Neal’s faculty attended a workshop titled “Globalizing Your Perspective, Classroom and School.” Offered by World View, a public service program at UNC-Chapel Hill that provides global knowledge, skills and strategies to educators, the session assists teachers by promoting global awareness and its relevance to the subjects they teach.
World View Assistant Director Holly Loranger was the facilitator. Faculty were able to share their vision of a “global student”, a “global classroom” as well as a “global school”. Looking past the “cultural lens”, putting aside stereotypes and understanding that different cultures have different perspectives were covered. Learning the true meaning of empathy, its importance in the realm of global awareness and how it differentiates from sympathy were also addressed.
The process in which one goes about incorporating global awareness into the classroom and school was discussed and many websites giving ideas for global connections were shared covering subject areas such as math, the environment and more.
An objective listed in O’Neal’s strategic plan is to “broaden the global education program”. The School’s strong base of global exposure via international student enrollment, opportunities for study abroad and foreign language studies starting in Pre-K3 will assist in moving on to the next step by integrating global education into multiple subject areas of the curriculum at all grade levels.
