Fifth Grade Learns the Importance of Story Telling

Fifth grade students worked in partnerships or small groups to write original stories after hearing examples from other cultures. These myths helped kick off the start of the ancient civilizations unit and stressed the importance of oral story telling.  The 5th graders were then tasked with choosing a scene from their story in which to animate. The students used the Project Space, O’Neal’s dedicated room for STEAM*-based projects. Through much trial and error and a whole lot of problem solving, their automatas were born through the use of a shoe-box, dowels, cams or gears and multi texture and colored foam. An automata is a machine that is typically not electric and performs a movement or function.  The students wrapped up their automata design unit by sharing them with K-4th grade students where they saw the stories come to life with cats chasing mice, lightning changing color and giraffes eating giant bananas (hence the long neck!) leaving plenty of time for questions and answers!
