Camp Caraway - The Freshmen Destination
Camp Caraway in Asheboro, NC has been the destination for the 9th grade class trip for the past five years and has continually been a trip to remember. In its sixth year, the trip did not disappoint—leaving all nineteen students and two chaperones all smiles upon arrival Friday afternoon. The three-day trip focuses on team building and growing unity among the ninth grade.
Throughout the three days, students are grouped into three teams and compete in various activities. Day one featured a photo scavenger hunt, time at the lake, and an evening highlight of a group game of “Bring Me.” The game “Bring Me” involved students working in their groups to create various items/characters that were requested, such as a future Disney character or future Boy Band. Giggles ran through the cabin common room as the ninth-grade groups worked together to put together clever characters and costumes.
Day 2 was fast paced and physical. Climbing walls and ziplines were the morning favorites. Mr. Williamson was even seen shouting in excitement going down the zipline. During the afternoon teambuilding activities, the 9th graders worked together in pairs to stack towers of crates and climb up them. The highest tower built and climbed successful was 13 crates high, tying a Camp Caraway record!
Later in the evening, the group headed up the mountain for a night hike to watch the sunset over the Uwharrie Mountains. A beautiful view was the backdrop for s’mores, lots of laughs and conversations amongst friends. Following the hike, students enjoyed an evening of karaoke and dancing into the late hours.
On the final day of camp, students participated in a “O’Neal Hunger Games” challenges put together by chaperones Dave Williamson and Lulu Brase. Searching for other team’s pennies and competing in a variety of challenges, all the ninth graders pushed themselves outside of their comfort zones and enjoyed many laughs along the way.
In the end, the trip was on for the record books. New friendships were formed, many memories were shared, but more than ever before the Class of 2023 came together as a group and truly enjoyed each moment spent with each other.
