Courage League Has First Meeting

The first official meeting of the Courage League happened this week. Nearly 50 middle school students were selected via an application process for the middle school component of the schoolwide leadership and character development program.

Under the direction of Charlie McHarney, director of leadership and character development, faculty advisors will conduct Courage League sessions in an effort to amplify social emotional learning as students engage in critical conversations and decision-making scenarios.  These critical conversations will seek to explore each Courage League members’ internal core values and principles and continue to raise awareness of right vs. wrong.  This will give students valuable practice with regards to principled decision-making, which also serves as a key character-building experience.
 
The Courage League will give its members valuable “reps” in principled decision-making to develop their character-based “muscles” in order to have courage to do what is right when the situation calls. “We want to empower our students to be morally courageous but also to have the Courage to speak and act authentically from their personal set of core values,” says Mr. McHarney.
 
As the divisional component of a schoolwide program, the Courage League will collaborate with the Lower School Culture Council and the Upper School Leadership Academy on service learning throughout the year.
