Falcons Nest - April 28th
The Falcons continue to have a strong showing on the fields, courts, and track as they look to finish out the regular season on a high note!
Varsity Girls Soccer
- O’Neal @ Burlington Christian Academy – Win 3-2 (OT)
There are two weeks left in the regular season. The only games left are conference matchups. O’Neal is undefeated in conference play and needs to stay that way to win the conference. Every game from here on out is essentially a playoff game. Would the Falcons withstand the pressure in their away match against BCA?
O’Neal got off to a strong start after ten minutes by successfully scoring a corner kick with a trick play they’d just learned. Defensive back Kennedi Hamner had an easy finish at the back post after striker Emeli Michael let the ball through her legs to fake out the defense. BCA responded well, scoring two goals and taking the lead. Jaleesa Eichel equalized for O’Neal seconds before halftime with a shot to the top of the net from a very wide angle.
The second half saw the two teams goalless despite O’Neal having more opportunities. The first ten-minute period of overtime was much of the same as the intensity kept ramping up. Less than a minute into the second overtime with penalty kicks looming, Charli Bunder put the game to bed with a floated cross that squeezed into the goal at the far post.
O’Neal travels to Carolina Friends this Friday, 4/28. They’ll then turn around and host Carolina Friends on Monday 5/1, and then will host Trinity of Durham/Chapel Hill on Friday 5/5 for senior night.
Varsity Boys Golf
The Falcons teed it up this week at Pinehurst #6 against the best teams in the State at the Pinecrest Invitational. Pete Myers, Jack Halloran, Max Martin, Andrew Hobbs and Jacob Graham represented the team and posted a respectable top 8 finish in a stacked field. Pete Myers and Jack Halloran led the way as both freshmen caught fire on their inward nines with a flurry of birdies. Halloran threw a dart on a par 5 leaving an easy tap-in. On his last hole, a par 3, he walked in a 20-foot birdie putt to end the day at even par 72. Myers was so hot he almost spontaneously combusted! He went on a tear, carding birdies on 4 of his last 5 holes with remarkable shot-making and putts rolling in from everywhere. Myers posted a 2-under par 70 for the tournament placing him in the top five and on the All-Tournament team. It was a strong day for the Falcons as they gear up for the playoffs.
Varsity Boys Tennis
- O'Neal vs Burlington Christian 8-1 (W)
The Falcons continued their winning play and extended their overall record to 9-2 with a win over Burlington Christian, which was played at the beautiful Olde Forest Racquet Club in Elon. The Wednesday, April 26 match with Forsyth Country Day as well as the match on Thursday, April 27 against Carolina Friends were all canceled due to rain.
Varsity Boys Baseball
- O'Neal at Burlington Christian Academy 2-3 (L)
O'Neal lost a heartbreaker on Tuesday night to the Burlington Christian Royals. Offensively, the Falcons put up two in the first on timely hits by Will Slagle and Jake Shepherd, but they were kept in check for much of the game. Jake Shepherd also turned in a gem of a performance on the mound, pitching six innings and only giving up one run. The loss put the Falcons into a tie for the conference lead and forces the team to win next Friday against Trinity of Durham to take home the title. That game is at home, and we would love to have your support!
Middle School Golf
The Falcons hosted Burlington Christian on Tuesday afternoon for a match at Longleaf CC. Both the O’Neal white and navy teams earned the win over BCA, with the White team narrowly beating out the navy team by 2 strokes. The low scorer for the afternoon was Natalia Henderson shooting a 39 for the navy team. Leading the white team were Dylan Wolfe and Keens Cameron shooting 41 respectively.
The Falcons will travel to McGregor Downs CC in Durham next Monday to compete against other local schools.
Middle School Girls Soccer
The Middle School Girls Soccer team traveled to Northwood Temple on Monday afternoon for a SEMSAC conference matchup. A sluggish start saw the Falcons earn numerous chances on goal in the first half but were unable to put one in the back of the net. The second half saw the Falcons come alive, first behind an unassisted goal from Paige Fusonie. Just moments later, Sydney Davis broke free and put a shot on goal which was deflected by the keeper and saw Joelle Cole follow behind to finish the goal.
The Falcons finished the contest strong warding off any Eagle attack to move to 8-0 in conference play and sets up a match-up between the two undefeated teams in the SEMSAC conference next week when the Falcons travel to SJPII on Wednesday afternoon.
