Upper School Biology Students Conduct DNA Damage Experiments

Upper School Biology students participated in DNA damage experiments, exposing different strains of yeast to a variety of forms of radiation and stress to see if some common student practices cause damage to cells of the human body.  Some of the tests included the impact of screens (phone and computer) on cells, a comparison of spray vs. cream sunscreen, the effect of watching your food in a microwave, and the impact of a variety of household products and beverages.

    • In the acetone vs non-acetone fingernail polish remover test, petri dishes are filled with different solutions.

    • Yeast is added to the petri dishes.

    • A petri dish is smeared with sun screen lotion for the lotion vs spray experiment.

    • Petri dishes of lotion vs spray sun screen sit out in the sun.

    • After incubation, some experiments require a look through the microscope.

    • Petri dishes are labeled.

    • Petri dishes are placed in front of a microwave often to test the effects of watching food cook.

    • Students examine and record data for their experiments

    • Glass beads are used as mixers in the petri dishes

    • The effects of using a cell phone is tested.
