First Week Ends with Convocation

As does many traditions at O'Neal, they often are introduced to the School by different people who join our community bringing different ideas and programs from their experiences. For instance, everyone's favorite "Senior Buddy Program" was introduced by retired Head of Upper School Richard Catania 11 years ago. When John Elmore took the position as Head of School seven years ago, he introduced the "Convocation" - where the entire student body assembles to celebrate the last day of the first week of school. The mission statement is recited, everyone says the Pledge of Allegiance and the head of school gives a few minutes of reflection.

In this morning's convocation, Mr. Elmore focused on the School's celebration of being 50 years old and what it was like the first year O'Neal opened its doors.... no school buildings, just mobile units; no gym, no pool, no formal sports fields or playgrounds. O'Neal has come a long way from 1971, but one thing that has withstood the test of time is O'Neal's community. We are One Community. One O'Neal.

Director of Student Life Lulu Brase followed with the team reveal for the Red/Blue All -School, Year-Long Points Competition.  Midde and upper school advisors and lower school teachers got to blindly pull a red or blue flag from a bag. Will the red team keep their champion status from last year or will the blue team work its way to victory?

Look for a video of the event soon.
