O’Neal Ninth Grade English Takes Others on Journey through “The Odyssey”
Lulu Brase’s English 9 students had the opportunity to put life to Homer’s “Odyssey” with some project-based learning and interaction with school community visitors.
After some preliminary research, students were each assigned a book within “The Odyssey”. Through reading, annotating, literary analysis, and online research, students created projects of their choosing that they thought could best teach peers about their assigned book within “The Odyssey”. The projects also included some additional research beyond the text. From posters to clay animation to board games to websites, students brought their own flare to their booth.
In addition to peers and other visitors, Kelley Adams’ second grade class visited the Upper School classroom to take advantage of the exhibits. It was perfect timing as the young students were studying ancient Greece. They enjoyed their journey through “The Odyssey” via various activities and became much more knowledgeable about the epic poem. “More importantly, we connected with our school community,” exclaims Mrs. Adams. “What a privilege to spend time with our tremendous role models!”
