O’Neal Kindergarten Reads in Motion for Beach Week
During the last days of school, the kindergarten classes carved out a “Beach Week”.
Using their learned writing process, students wrote about the ideal beach day. For ABC order and syllable count exercises, they used beach vocabulary. After writing how to build a sand castle, the students went outside to the sandbox and tested their directions to build the perfect structure. As a scientific motion experiment, oceans were made with water bottles and beach-themed word problems were solved in math. On the culinary front, edible beach snacks were made.
A very exciting activity of the week was the book walk. A unique way to interactively read a book, the students read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Shells. The students were divided into small teams and given a container to carry along with them. They read a page from the book and collected an item for their container. They continued to go to each station reading and collecting items that corresponded with that page. At the end of the book, the students gathered to discuss the story by going through the items they collected.
As a culmination for beach week, the students signed beach balls, much like a year book, as a kindergarten keepsake.
