Upper School Science Olympiad Qualifies for States

The Upper School Science Olympiad varsity team placed 4th overall in regional competition giving them a ticket to the State Tournament at NC State University on Saturday, April 23rd.
Regional competition was divided into two different sessions. On February 5th the virtual portion of the competition was held on campus at O’Neal and consisted of tests on different subjects such as Astronomy, Environmental Chemistry, and Ornithology.

Some segments required the design, construction and performance of an experiment or a car to roll down a ramp and reach a specific distance. This smaller group of students responsible for these segments traveled Fayetteville Technical Community College on February 26th to test these devices they had previously built, in person. These devices included elastic band-powered planes, bridges, bottle rockets, and catapults.

The Upper School team is comprised of a JV and a varsity team. The JV team won a total of 5 medals and the varsity team won a total of 16 medals, including two first place medals. The varsity team was one of 18 teams competing in the tournament and came in 4th place overall qualifying them for the state tournament.

The varsity team placed 1st in the all-virtual 2021 regional competition earning the School the first time appearance at the Science Olympiad State Tournament as a high school level team.
