O’Neal Falcons Clinch Tennis Conference Title with Sight on State Championship

The O’Neal School’s varsity boys’ tennis team concluded regular season play with a huge win against rival Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill.  The match began with singles, and the Falcons only won 2 out of the 6 singles matches. Needing to score all 3 doubles points to win the match.  #2 doubles won handedly, and #1 battled it out and came out on top 8-6, but most impressively at the #3 position they rallied from behind after losing the first 3 games of the 8-game pro-set.  “It was a huge momentum builder going into the playoffs, and the coaches were most proud of the team spirit, sportsmanship, and fight displayed by all the athletes,” comments Athletic Director James Franklin. “They worked as a team and did their jobs on each court...proof that hard work and fight pay off in the end!”
The team concluded the regular season with a 10-1 record overall, and an undefeated 8-0 in conference play earning the Tri-TAC Conference Championship!
The Falcons earned the #2 seed for the NCISAA play-offs. They continued their strong form with a comprehensive 5-0 win in the quarterfinals and against Carolina Friends School. The win advanced O’Neal to the Final Four for the second straight season where they met Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill for the second time in 10 days. After another nail-biting match, O’Neal came out on top 5-4 to progress to the championship match.
The NCISAA Championship contest will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 10am at Salem Academy.
