O’Neal Launches New School Year with All-School Convocation
On the first day of school, O’Neal officially welcomed students, faculty, and staff to the 2026-2027 school year with an energetic all-school convocation that brought Falcons from every division together.
The gathering began with the entrance of O’Neal’s seniors and their second-grade senior buddies, a beloved tradition that symbolizes leadership, mentorship, and the strong sense of community that defines the school. Head of School John Samples welcomed students back to campus and encouraged them to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
“It’s going to be a great year,” Samples said. “There’s been such excitement and energy and enthusiasm today. You can feel it. There’s something different this year, and I challenge each and every one of you to keep it going.”
Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Student Body President Harper Hairston spoke about the importance of unity, friendship, and community as students begin a new school year.
“Regardless of how you’re feeling, I want to encourage all of you to put your best foot forward at being in a community with your peers this year,” Hairston said. “Whether that’s forming a study group, inviting a new friend to join you on the playground, or trying a new club, I look forward to meeting all of you this year, and let’s make it a good one.”
Samples reflected on the many experiences awaiting students this year, from athletics, performances, and the Halloween Carnival to Homecoming, Prom, school trips, promotions, and graduation. He reminded students that while there will be celebrations and accomplishments, there will also be challenges that require resilience and support from one another.
“Take care of one another,” Samples said. “Let’s make the bad days better. Let’s make the good days great.”
Throughout his remarks, Samples emphasized the values of kindness, presence, service, and gratitude. He encouraged students to build meaningful relationships, support their peers, and focus on creating memories that will last long after the school year ends.
“Be kind. Be present. Focus on your family, your friends, and your Falcon community,” he said. “When we focus on helping others, we become resilient, we overcome challenges, and we make memories together.”
The assembly also provided an opportunity to recognize O’Neal’s newest students, faculty, and staff members, who were welcomed with enthusiastic applause from the Falcon community.
As the school year begins, the message was clear: every student has the opportunity to contribute to a culture of belonging, character, and excellence. Together, as One O’Neal, the community is poised to make the 2026-2027 school year one filled with growth, connection, and unforgettable memories.
“Let’s make memories,” Samples concluded. “Let’s do it as One O’Neal.”
