O'Neal Athletics
A weekly recap of O'Neal Athletics.
MS Baseball
O’Neal vs Fayetteville Christian School: 10-21, L
On March 9th, The O’Neal School came up short against Fayetteville Christian School, falling in a high-scoring matchup. Despite the loss, the Falcons saw strong offensive performances from Charlie Borland and Gabriel Rodriguez. Borland had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two singles, a triple, two RBIs, two runs scored, and three stolen bases, while Rodriguez also went 3-for-3 with three singles, one RBI, two runs scored, and three stolen bases, helping keep pressure on the opposing defense. Borland also contributed on the mound, pitching two innings with three strikeouts, allowing three hits and three earned runs while battling through four walks and two hit batters. The Falcons will look to build on their offensive momentum as they continue through the season.

Varsity Boys Baseball
O’Neal vs Northwood Temple Academy: 12-2, Loss
The Falcons hosted Northwood at home last Friday. A 9-run 5th inning was the blunder, in what was a close game and a tight matchup before this took place. Oliver Gabor's 2-run single in the 1st inning was the only run production manufactured. Charlie Borland also had a good day at the plate going 2-2 with 2 steals. The Falcons shook it off and faced Fayetteville Christian School on Tuesday.

O'Neal vs. Fayetteville Christian School: 18-7, Win
O'Neal lit up the scoreboard this past Tuesday in what felt like a must-win contest. Everyone played a part in the electric win, but the Falcons were led by Joey Wade. Wade led the offense, highlighted by a 2-run home run to dead center. Wade also threw 5 innings on the mound. The hits continued to pour on with a bases clearing double by Jack Habets and multi-hit games from most of the lineup. The Falcons will have their hands full next weekend with an away game with the North Moore Mustangs next Tuesday at 5pm.

Boys Varsity Golf
O’Neal vs Sandhills Highlanders: 220-242, L
The O’Neal Varsity Boys Golf team competed against the Highlanders at Legacy Golf Links on March 9. Luke Valkovics led the Falcons with an outstanding even par 72 to pace the team. Andrew Hobbs followed with an 81, while Charlie Monroe and Will Simmons each shot 91 to round out the Falcons' scoring. Timothy Hu also contributed a solid round with a 92.

The low round of the day was recorded by Highlanders golfer Sam Terry, who finished with a 3 under par 69.Team scores were determined by the lowest three individual scores from each team.

MS Girls Soccer
O’Neal vs Village Christian Academy: 2-0, W
Last Friday the girls middle school soccer team visited a talented and older Village Christian squad.  The girls rose to the challenge, outworking Village throughout the game and coming away with a convincing victory. The defense was solid throughout and showed growth in their positioning and communication. Offensively, the team made the most of their chances, capitalizing on Village Christian errors to turn the game our way.

O’Neal vs Fayetteville Christian School: 1-1 Regulation 4-3 PKs, W
The win over the Knights was followed up with another tough road contest on Monday against Fayetteville Christian, and the team delivered one of the most memorable moments of their young season. After a hard-fought match where the girls recovered from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game, we went into penalty kicks. A couple timely conversions and a great save allowed the Falcons to come away with a penalty kick victory over the Warriors.

O’Neal vs Sandhills Highlanders: 1-2, L
Thursday’s non-conference clash with the Sandhills Highlanders was the Falcons toughest so far, where the team had to navigate cold and windy conditions. Even though the score ultimately didn’t fall the Falcons’ way, there was a lot to be proud of in the overall contest. The team played hard throughout, created multiple late scoring chances, and the experience should help the athletes down the road. Ultimately, it was a week of facing a variety of challenges, and the coaching staff is proud of the girls for how they handled them all.

Varsity Girls Soccer
O’Neal vs Fayetteville Christian School: 1-4, L
The Falcons opened the match with a strong first half in a competitive back and forth contest that saw scoring opportunities from both teams. O’Neal struck first when Lilly Hobson delivered a corner kick that found the head of senior captain Kennedi Hamner. Her header hit the crossbar and bounced straight down where fellow senior captain Jordin Reed ensured the goal by heading it again into the back of the net.
The second half shifted momentum as the already physical game became increasingly physical. O’Neal battled through multiple injuries during the half, forcing several players out of the match. Despite the Falcons’ effort to regroup, the Warriors were able to capitalize on openings and scored four goals in the second half to secure the win.

O’Neal vs Fayetteville Academy: 2-0, W
The Falcons responded with energy and determination on a frigid Thursday night against Fayetteville Academy. O’Neal controlled much of the match, with the defense putting together a relentless performance that shut down Fayetteville Academy’s scoring chances.

The Falcons also showed strong improvement in their passing combinations and communication throughout the game. Reed created the first goal, sending a ball across the goal that Abigail Schupp finished past the keeper. The second goal came when Sydney Davis threaded a pass through the defense to Haddie Habets. Using her speed, Habets beat the back line to create a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper. She remained composed, took a settling touch, and found the opening to score.

The Falcons look to rest and recover over the weekend to prep for a two-game week next week facing off against non-conference Father Capodanno and conference opponent Freedom Christian Academy.

Varsity Boys Tennis
O'Neal vs. Caldwell Academy: Final 3-6, Loss
On Monday, the varsity boys tennis team hosted a competitive squad from Greensboro in a hard-fought home match played under hot conditions, with pro-sets to eight games used throughout the contest. Strong singles play highlighted the afternoon, with Will French earning an 8–4 win, Nathan Reifenstahl posting an 8–3 victory, and Jacob Lian securing an impressive 8–1 result. The heat added an extra challenge for both teams as players battled through long rallies. While the team found success in singles play, doubles proved more difficult, with Caldwell Academy gaining the edge in several tightly contested matches.

O’Neal vs. Fayetteville Christian: Final 9-0, Win
The tennis team then delivered a dominant performance Tuesday with a 9–0 sweep in an away match at Tokay Athletic Complex, showcasing exceptional play in both singles and doubles across all lines. The victory marks the team’s first conference win of the season and reflects the work the team has put in through early-season preparation and competition. A highlight of the match came when Oriol Mateu Masdeu earned his first competitive singles victory in the United States, an exciting milestone for the team. Oriol played line 6 singles, and won in an impressive 6-0, 6-0 fashion. The clean sweep demonstrated the depth of the lineup and the team’s growing confidence as the season gets underway.

The team was looking forward to playing Fayetteville Academy on Thursday, but unfortunately was unable to due to rain-soaked tennis courts.  Looking forward to that match later in the season.
