Honoring The Nuzzos

At the scholarship reception Thursday night, O'Neal took the opportunity to honor Sal and Teeda Nuzzo for their generosity of offering a full 4-year scholarship for 16 Upper School students culminating to a total investment of close to $1 million.
Sixteen years ago, Sal and Teeda Nuzzo were looking for some way to give appreciation to the energy and spirit that Father John Nicola gave them in his sermons. At the time, Father Nicola also taught Greek and Latin at The O'Neal School. Father Nicola suggested to them that they give to O'Neal. For 16 years since, the Nuzzos have enjoyed awarding this need-based scholarship to deserving students in the community. Sal himself attended Yale on scholarship and he understands the difference that scholarship made in his life and he yearned to do the same for others.

With the planned move to Florida and the stipulation that they only give in the state that they reside, the Nuzzo scholarship has now ended; however, the relationships these Nuzzo scholars have with this great couple continue and O'Neal will forever be grateful for what they have given. The veranda outside of the Upper School has been named in honor of Sal and Teeda Nuzzo.

Remarks:

“Mr. and Mrs. Nuzzo have given me so much over the past 8 years that I have known them; not only throughout my time at O’Neal but even after graduation. We’ve continued to stay in contact while I’ve been in college and they have even come to visit me in New York a couple of times, giving me the little taste of home that I needed to get me through college.

The Nuzzos are very special to me; they gave me the opportunity to attend one of the best high schools in North Carolina, which has opened so many doors for me since then, but also gave me their care and support throughout my educational career. Their genuine care of all of their scholarship recipients, even after the students have left O’Neal, is inspiring and extremely special.

Mr. and Mrs. Nuzzo, thank you so much for all that you have done for me and for all that you have done for O’Neal and the other Nuzzo scholarship recipients. You both are truly kind and special people and we will forever be grateful.” --Meagan Watkins ‘12 - Columbia University Senior

“ ‘Thank You’ does not seem a strong enough sentiment to express the amount of gratitude that I hold for Mr. and Mrs. Nuzzo. I will never forget how nervous I felt when interviewing for the Nuzzo Family Scholarship and little did I know that one day I would consider it to be the key to my successes. I truly believe that attending the O’Neal School gave me the skills I needed to gain early admission to North Carolina State University and then a position with one of the largest military housing management companies in the nation. I was so incredibly lucky to attend The O’Neal School and I could not have done it without the incredible generosity and continuous support from Mr. and Mrs. Nuzzo. It is both a pleasure and an honor to have been one of your scholarship recipients and I will be forever grateful.” -- Emma Craven Morahan ‘10
