O'Neal solidifies Conference Runner-Up spot and berth in State Championships with 9-0 win over Village Christian

On an emotional Senior Day for Katie Salloum, Maggie Hakas, and Katherine McMurray, the O’Neal Tennis team defeated Village Christian 9-0 to solidify their spot as Cape Fear Independent Conference Runner-Up and earn a spot in the State Championship Tournament.  
Southern Pines, NC –  On an emotional Senior Day for Katie Salloum, Maggie Hakas, and Katherine McMurray, the O’Neal Tennis team defeated Village Christian 9-0 to solidify their spot as Cape Fear Independent Conference Runner-Up and earn a spot in the State Championship Tournament.    
 
#1 seed Greyson Keel (ON) defeated Allison Copeland (VC) 10-0. #2 seed Maggie Hakas (ON) d. Layne Sessoms (VC) 10-1.     The #3 match saw Emma Gentry Landry (ON) defeat Olivia Stout (VC) 10-1.  In the #4 seed match, Sophia Renner defeated Casey Patillo (VC) 10-4. # 5 seed Kennon Later (ON) defeated Casey Patillo (VC) 10-2 and improve her singles record to 14-2.  #6 seed Dana Averbook defeated Stephanie Cales (VC)) 10-0.

With a 6-0   lead by Cape Fear headed into Doubles play,  the #1 match saw Madison McGuirt and Greyson Keel (ON) defeating the Village Christian duo of Layne and Olivia (VC) 8-0     The #2 match saw the O’Neal   duo of Maggie Hakas and Sophia Renner defeat   Casey and Royal (VC) 8-0.  The #3 match sealed the victory with Seniors Katherine McMurray and Amanda Salloum (ON) defeating Copeland and Cales (VC) 8-2.
 
“It was a great day for our Seniors!” said Coach Carl Bryan. “I am so proud that Katherine, Katie and Maggie went out as winners in their matches and as a team. The girls played really well today and secured their Conference Runner-up spot. It was an emotional day as the Seniors reflected on the season at the end of the match. I could not be more proud of the entire team for their work effort this season and I am especially glad their efforts earned them a spot in the State Championships.”
 
The Falcons depart on Thursday to go to Rocky Mount to participate in the State Championships. The Falcons were one of twelve teams selected out of 18 vying for the tournament.
